Why Canberra?
Canberra, the bush capital
Canberra's history is rooted in both Indigenous heritage and its designation as Australia's capital city. Following the federation of Australia in 1901, a competition was held to design the new national capital. Construction began in 1913, and Canberra officially became the nation's capital in 1927 with the opening of Provisional Parliament House.
The name "Canberra" is derived from an Aboriginal word, potentially meaning "meeting place" and sometimes affectionately called The Bush capital for its sweeping nature reserves and surrounding mountain ranges.
